Here are a few simple tips that could save you money and extend the longevity of your plumbing systems.
Disconnect your garden hose from the faucet in freezing conditions
Have your sprinkler system professionally blown out for winter months
Drain your water heater once a year to flush sediment out
Replace rubber washing machine hoses every 2 years
Add a whole house water filter to improve your drinking water
Always use cold water in disposal when it is operating. Grind ice cubes to clean and lemon peels to freshen. Do not use commercial drain products
Dispose of most of your food waste into garbage can and use your disposal only for small particals of food
Clean filters & lube bearings on evaporative coolers once a year and check belts for damage
Do not use in-tank chemical cleaners in your toilet
If you leave for an extended period of time you should turn off your main water supply and set your water heater to vacation mode
Repair leaky faucets and shower heads. A leak of one drip per second can cost $1 per month and wastes 400 gallons of water in a year
Get your septic tank pumped and cleaned every 2 to 5 years
For electric water heaters, install a timer that can automatically turn the hot water off at night and on in the morning. A simple timer can pay for itself in less than a year.
